Importing Internet Explorer Settings May Affect Other Policies (277558)

SYMPTOMS

In Group Policy Editor, when you modify the Internet Explorer Maintenance policy by selecting Import The Current Connection Settings, Import The Current Security Zones Settings, Import the Current Content Ratings Settings, or Import Current Authenticode Security Information your current settings may seem to have been changed or lost.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur because your importation of settings into Group Policy also transfers the Internet connection settings from the current user's profile into Group Policy. These settings are displayed using the local Microsoft Internet Explorer user interface (UI).

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, you must log on to the system as another user and modify each policy. If you require more than one Internet Explorer Maintenance policy that requires you to import settings into two separate policies, use two different user accounts.

Log on to the system as a user with administrative rights, and then import the Internet Explorer settings into a Group Policy. Then log on to the system as a different user with administrative rights and import the Internet Explorer policies into another (a second) Group Policy.

For example, your system has an Organizational Unit (OU) policy and a Domain policy. If you modify the Organizational Unit policy to be set to "Always Dial" and you edit the Domain policy to be set to "Never Dial", when you return to the Organizational Unit policy and click Import The Current Connection Settings, you can observe that the policy seems to be set to "Never Dial".
