ENT2001: Entourage Quits With a Type 10 Error Message (277032)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q277032

SYMPTOMS

When you start Entourage, it may unexpectedly quit and you may receive the following error message:
Sorry, a system error of type 10 occurred.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the current identity is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, create a new identity, and then move your data files to the new identity. To create a new identity and migrate the Entourage data, follow these steps:
  1. Locate the current identity. The default location for the current identity is in the following folder:

    Hard Disk:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Office 2001 Identities

  2. Drag the current identity to your desktop.
  3. Start Entourage.
  4. Close the New Account Wizard without configuring an account.
  5. Quit Entourage. A new Identity folder is created in the Office 2001 Identities folder with the same name as the original Identity folder that caused the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article. This new Identity folder contains a complete set of new and empty files.

  6. Open the new Identity folder, and then drag the newly created set of files to the Trash icon.
  7. Locate and open the folder that contains the Identity files from the original identity. Drag the files to the newly created Identity folder.
  8. Start Entourage. The previous mail folders are displayed.

QuickView Reminder State Locks Files

In some cases, the Database, Database Cache, and Preferences files may be reported as currently in use. This condition does not allow you to remove these files from the newly created Identity file structure as described in step 5. This is because you are using Office QuickView and the Reminder option is turned on. To turn off the Reminder option, click the Office QuickView icon on the Macintosh Control Strip, and then click Turn Reminders Off. You are now able to completely remove the Identity folder.

MORE INFORMATION

The identity that is currently active is stored as an Entourage preference. If the folder that contains the files that make up the Identity is not present, a new folder with the same Identity name is created. The files within this new Identity folder are default and empty and are not configured.

Entourage may unexpectedly quit without the error message.
