OL2000: The Internet E-mail Received Date Displays as None (276607)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q276607

SYMPTOMS

When you view messages that you received from your Internet e-mail server (either Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) or Internet Mail Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) in Outlook, the Received column in your Inbox displays "None" (without quotation marks) for some or all messages.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because some Internet e-mail servers create Internet e-mail headers that do not conform to the RFC 822 specifications that define Internet standards for recording date and time zone information. As a result, Outlook does not process the received date.

To view the received date format for an Internet e-mail message, open the message, click the View menu, and then click Options. In the Internet Headers text box, locate the Received field that includes the received date stamp.

The proper format for the date is:

day-of-week day month year hour zone

The day-of-week is optional.

The following is an example of an improperly formatted date:

Fri Sep 1 17:27:37 2000

The following displays the same date, properly formatted to specifications:

Fri 1 Sep 2000 17:27:37 +1100

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Inform them that their mail server(s) appears not to conform to the RFC 822 specification.
