ENT2001: Computer Hangs with Entourage and Internet Explorer Running (276562)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q276562

SYMPTOMS

When Entourage and Microsoft Internet Explorer are running simultaneously, your computer may stop responding (hang) and you may receive error messages.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because of mismatched or outdated support libraries. With both Internet Explorer 5 and Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac installed, the following libraries need to be present in the Extensions folder (version numbers in parentheses):
  • Microsoft Component Library (Internet Explorer installs version 2.2.2, Office 2001 updates to version 2.30)
  • Microsoft Framework (version 5.02)
  • Microsoft Internet Library (Internet Explorer installs version 5.02, Office 2001 updates to version 5.03)
  • Microsoft OLE Automation (version 2.30.2426)
  • Microsoft OLE Library (version 2.30)
  • Microsoft Clipboard Library (version 1.0)
  • Microsoft Structured Storage (version 2.30)
One or more of these libraries may not be installed or updated properly, or libraries may have been damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, refresh the libraries for Internet Explorer and Office 2001 for Mac. Both Internet Explorer and Office 2001 for Mac use First Run Installer for proper reinstallation of these critical files. This utility checks for the required libraries when the program starts. If a file is absent, First Run Installer installs a new copy to replace the absent files.

NOTE: To maximize Macintosh system resources during the following steps, close all running programs. The First Run Installer procedure does not affect browser Favorites and files created with Office applications, but it is recommended that you back up important files when you perform system maintenance.

To refresh the libraries for Internet Explorer and Office 2001 for Mac:
  1. Use the Sherlock utility to locate the files that are listed in the "Cause" section of this article. Select the files, and then drag them to the Trash on the Macintosh desktop.
  2. Start Internet Explorer. The First Run Installer places new copies of Microsoft Component Library, Microsoft Framework, and Microsoft Internet Library in the Extensions folder.
  3. Verify that Internet Explorer is functional, and then close the program.
  4. Start Entourage and allow the First Run Installer to finish updating the remaining files.
