Memory Leak in Winmgmt Process When Running Network Load Balancing (276538)

SYMPTOMS

When you are running Network Load Balancing (NLB) on a Windows 2000-based server, system responsiveness may appear sluggish over time, and clients may report a gradual decrease in system performance. You may also receive "Out of Virtual Memory" error messages, and the computer may stop responding (hang) when the memory is completely exhausted.

If you track the amount of private bytes for Winmgmt.exe, you may note that over time it increases without ever decreasing. You can view this behavior by using the Windows 2000 Performance snap-in by selecting the following counter to monitor:

Object: Process
Instance: Winmgmt
Counter: Private Bytes

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
