SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Windows Media Player 7 for Mac, you receive the following error message:
There is not enough memory to open Windows Media Player... Closing windows or quitting desk accessories can make more memory available.

CAUSE

One of several conditions may contribute to this error:
  • Virtual Memory is not set to On.

    -or-

  • Too many programs are currently running, which reduces the amount of available memory.

    -or-

  • Your Macintosh does not meet the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows Media Player 7 for Mac.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Media Player 7 for Mac requires a minimum suggested memory size of 15000 kilobytes (KB) with Virtual Memory turned on, and a minimum of 17194 KB with virtual memory turned off. For best performance, run Windows Media Player 7 for Mac with Virtual Memory turned on. To view the current memory settings for Windows Media Player 7 for Mac, click the program icon once, on the Finder File menu, click Get Info, and then click Memory.

Turning on Virtual Memory

  1. On the Apple menu, click Control Panels, and then click Memory.
  2. In Virtual Memory, click On.
  3. Close the Memory control panel, and then restart the Macintosh.

Minimum System Requirements

The Windows Media Player 7 for Mac Readme file lists the following minimum system requirements:
  • Apple Mac OS 8.1 or later (Mac OS 8.6 or later recommended)
  • PowerPC 603e 180 MHz or higher processor
  • 32 megabytes (MB) or higher of RAM
  • Virtual Memory turned on
  • 10 MB of free hard disk space
  • Monitor color depth of 256 colors (Millions of colors recommended)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.1 or later (Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later recommended), Netscape Navigator 4.x (PowerPC version), Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later (PowerPC version), or America Online for Macintosh 4.0 or 5.0
