LookupAccountSid for "NT Authority\System" Results in Unnecessary Network Traffic (276431)

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q276431

SYMPTOMS

If a workstation issues a lookup to LookupAccountSid for the "NT Authority\System" account and this name is passed to the domain controller (DC), the DC will try to find the "System" account in all of its trusted domains. The following results may occur:
  • Windows NT 4.0-based clients do not know how to resolve "NT Authority\System" so they pass it off to the DC. The DC never tries to perform well-known SID resolution from names that are presented from a workstation.
  • Windows 2000-based clients NULL out the domain portion if it is equal to NT Authority, as it is in this case. Because of this, the System account is never resolved, and each of the trusted domains is contacted to try to resolve the account.
