OL2000: Outlook Does Not Recognize a CMAK Connection (276361)

SYMPTOMS

If you use a Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) networking connection to connect to the Internet, Outlook may not recognize the connection as valid.

Both Microsoft Outlook Express and Microsoft Internet Explorer can use the CMAK connection.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following two methods to work around this behavior:
  • Open the CMAK connection before you start Outlook. If the connection is open, Outlook uses the CMAK connection and can send and receive messages.

    -or-

  • Delete the CMAK connection and uninstall the software that you used to create the connection. Then, configure a manual connection by using the Network and Dial-up Connection option.

How to Make a New Connection

To manually make a new network connection:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Network and Dial-up Connection.
  2. Double-click Make New Connection, and then complete the wizard to make a new connection.

How to Configure Outlook to Use the New Connection

The following section describes how to configure Outlook to use the new connection with either the Internet Mail Only (IMO) option or the Corporate or Workgroup (CW) option.

Outlook IMO

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Internet Mail Only option installed, you see "Internet Mail Only".

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  3. On the Mail tab, click your account, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Connection tab, click your new connection in the Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection box.
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.

Outlook CW

NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Services.
  3. On the Services tab, click Internet E-mail, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Connection tab, click your new connection in the Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection box.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Network (MSN) version 5.1 uses a CMAK connection by default, and MSN users may experience this behavior.
