To troubleshoot NetCrawl, follow these steps:

NOTE: Before you begin, verify that a client computer and protocol are already installed.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  2. Click Configuration.
  3. In the The following network components are installed section, ensure that the following entries are displayed:
    • Client for Microsoft networks
    • A network adapter
    • A protocol (TCP/IP)
    • File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks
  4. If any of these items are missing, click the Add button, and then add the missing component.
After you confirm this configuration, use the following troubleshooting method:
  1. Simplify the network configuration so that it only has two or three computers.
  2. Confirm that NetCrawl is not disabled.For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  3. Click Start, click Run, and then type \\targetcomputername to verify that a share is present and visible on each computer.
  4. If the shares are not visible, double-click My Network Places on each computer, and then press the F5 key to refresh the view.
  5. If the shares are still not visible, restart one computer and repeat step four.
  6. If the shares are still not visible, back up the registry using the Scanreg functionality or by using System Restore, make a restore point, and then delete the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\NetCrawl

  7. Restart the computer and repeat step four.
