SMTP Service does not work with status code 4.3.1 when sending message using Telnet (276326)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Internet Information Server 5.0
This article was previously published under Q276326 SYMPTOMS
When you use telnet to send a message to port 25 of the Windows 2000 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service, the service may return a status code of "4.3.1 Out of Memory" after the data command is sent.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the System account does not have sufficient permissions to write the message to the proper folder. By default, the System account has sufficient permissions, but if an administrator modifies NTFS file system (NTFS) security permissions, the administrator may inadvertently affect mail flow.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, grant the System account full control permissions to the Mailroot folder and the Mailroot folder's subfolders.
