Error Message: Cannot Find File: C:\Windows\System\Scanreg.vbs (276325)

SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot find file: C:\windows\system\scanreg.vbs
Also, the Regedit.exe file may be missing from your computer.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your computer is infected with the IRC/Stages.worm virus.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Obtain and install an anti-virus program for your computer, and then try to detect and remove the virus.
  2. Extract a new copy of the Regedit.exe file to the Windows folder. For information about how to use the Extract tool, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
