WD2002: Word Prints Tracked Changes Differently Than in Earlier Versions (276193)

This article was previously published under Q276193 SYMPTOMS
When you print a Word document that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Word and that contains tracked changes (revisions), Word 2002 prints some of the changes differently than it did in the earlier version.
For example, when you print an earlier-version Word document that contains deleted text, Word 2002 prints the deleted text in balloons, instead of as strikethrough text.
CAUSE
So that the layout of your document can be preserved, Word displays some changes inline and the rest of the changes in balloons that appear in the margin of your document.
For more information about comments and tracked changes, click Microsoft Word Help on the
Help menu, type track changes in the Office Assistant or
the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics
returned.
WORKAROUND
To print your Word document so that the revisions appear as they did in the earlier version of Microsoft Word, turn off the Use balloons in Print and Web Layout option. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Track Changes tab, click to clear the Use balloons in Print and Web Layout check box.
- Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
NOTE: If your document is printed with a large right-side margin and you are not printing comments or tracked changes, change the Display for Review box on the Reviewing toolbar to Final. If the Reviewing toolbar is not displayed, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Reviewing.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
