Event ID 15120 Occurs During Startup of Site Server Content Deployment Service (276058)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the account under which the Site Server Content Deployment Service is running, the following event may be logged in the Application Event Log:

Event ID: 15120
Description: Thank you for your interest in Site Server Content Deployment. This software has expired. Please acquire the final retail version of this software.

CAUSE

This error message does not reflect the actual cause of the error. This error occurs because the user account or user name that is entered for the service is not a member of the Administrators group on the server.

RESOLUTION

Make sure that the account that the Site Server Content Deployment Service runs under is a member of the local Administrators group on the server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Install Site Server 3.0 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server, and follow the instructions at the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. In the Content Deployment Service, change the user name to a domain user account that has no administrative rights on the server. You receive a message that confirms that "run as service" is now granted to this user.
  3. In Control Panel, click Services. Stop and restart the Content Deployment Service. The service fails to start, and event ID 15120 is logged in the Application Event Log.
