XADM: Background Scanning Behavior of the Antivirus Application Programming Interface (276056)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q276056 SUMMARY
In Exchange Server 5.5, the antivirus application programming interface (API) thread that is responsible for background scanning can only be initiated when the information store is started. If background scanning is enabled after the information store has been started, the information store service must be stopped and restarted for background scanning to be enabled.
Exchange 2000 Server is more dynamic. After background scanning is enabled, the change is detected during the next registry polling interval. The background scanning task is initiated without the need to interrupt the information store process.
MORE INFORMATION
If virus scanning is stopped or disabled on an Exchange Server 5.5 computer, background scanning may need to be re-enabled, and the Information Store service must be stopped and restarted to re-initialize the background scanning task.
Some antivirus vendors require that the information store be stopped and restarted to re-initialize the background scanning task after a virus signature update.
