IntelliMouse: Forward and Back Web Navigation Buttons Do Not Work (274796)

SYMPTOMS

The Web navigation buttons on the sides of the Microsoft pointing devices listed at the beginning of this article do not work in a Netscape Communicator or America Online (AOL) browser.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if either of the following conditions are true:
  • You run either America Online (AOL) versions 5.0, 6.0, or 7.0 on your computer.
  • You run the Netscape Communicator version 4.61, 4.77, or 6.0 browser on your computer.
NOTE: This issue usually occurs on a computer with Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition installed.

To resolve this issue, set the forward navigation button and the back navigation button on your Microsoft mouse to use custom key strokes. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Downloaded and installed the IntelliPoint 4.0 software:
  2. From Start, point to Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Mouse icon.
  4. On the Buttons tab, check the Enable program-specific button settings option.
  5. Click Settings.
  6. Under the Programs window, click Add button.
  7. Browse to the folder holding the program executable (.exe) for the browser/program. With AOL, you will need the executable for the AOL program:

    C:\America Online 6.0

  8. Highlight and double-click the file to open it.click Open. For example, AOL would be WAOL.EXE.
  9. Under Large Thumb button, click Down, and then select Keystroke.
  10. On the next window, press ALT+ the Left Arrow Key, and then click OK.
  11. Under Small Thumb button, click Down, and then select Keystroke.
  12. On the next window, press ALT+ the Right Arrow, and then click OK.
  13. Click OK twice to exit.
  14. Test in your AOL/Netscape browser.
