XL2001: "Microsoft Excel Cannot Paste the Data" Error When You Create Hyperlink (274784)

When you hold down CONTROL and drag a cell that contains text or a value to a new location, a shortcut menu appears. If you click Create Hyperlink Here on the shortcut menu, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Excel cannot paste the data.
The cell is not copied to the new location and no hyperlink is created.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
- Select the cell to copy.
- Hold down OPTION and drag the cell to the new location.
Excel creates a copy of the cell in that location. - Hold down CONTROL, click the new cell, and then click Hyperlink on the shortcut menu.
- In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click the Document tab.
- Under Anchor, click Locate.
- In the Type in the cell reference box, type the cell reference to the cell that you used in step 1. Click OK.
Excel creates a copy of the original cell that contains a hyperlink to the original cell location.
