ACC2000: Error Message: "This Feature Requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.00 or Greater" (274713)

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Access 2000, you receive the following error message:
This feature requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.00 or greater. You can install IE5 from the Internet Explorer folder on the Microsoft Office 2000 CD or download it from the Internet Explorer site on the Microsoft Web.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • Your operating system is Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0.
  • Your operating system did not have Internet Explorer installed before you installed Access 2000, or your operating system had Internet Explorer no later than version 2.0 installed before you installed Access 2000.
  • After you installed Access 2000, you use the Add/Remove Programs tool to remove Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools.
To run, Access 2000 must have at least the Internet Explorer 5 browsing components. Internet Explorer 5 does not, however, have to be your default internet browser.

RESOLUTION

Run Internet Explorer 5 Setup. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, click Browse. Insert either the first Office 2000 compact disc or your Access 2000 compact disc into your CD-ROM drive.
  3. Browse to the \Ie5\en\ folder on the compact disc, and then double-click Ie5setup.exe.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete Setup.NOTE: If you choose a custom installation, the only components required are Internet Explorer 5.0 Web Browser and Visual Basic Scripting Support.

You need Internet Explorer 5 or later even though the error messages indicates you need version 3.0 or later.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. On a clean computer, install either the original Windows 95 with no Internet Explorer or Windows NT 4.0 with Internet Explorer 2.0.
  2. Install Access 2000.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  4. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  5. Remove Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools.
  6. After Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools are removed, try to start Access 2000.

    Note that you receive the error that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
