Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 Does Not Establish an SSL Tunnel Through a Proxy on Port 80 (274690)

SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 (SP2) cannot establish a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) tunnel through a proxy on port 80. You receive the following error message:
12204 SSL port specified is not allowed

CAUSE

This error message occurs because Internet Explorer sends an incorrect CONNECT request to port 0 on the proxy.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a port other than port 80 to establish an SSL tunnel through a proxy.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
