The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001
This article was previously published under Q274665 SYMPTOMS
If you copy a file that has no extension (such as .doc, .txt) into a SharePoint Portal Server workspace folder, and then you open it in Microsoft Word and try to check in the file, you receive the following error message when you save the publishing form:
This is not a valid file name.
Try one or more of the following:
Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly.
Select a file from the list of files and folders.
RESOLUTION
You must save the document as a file type to check in the file. For example, if you create the document in Notepad and call it My Document, you are prompted to save the file as My Document.txt to complete check in. Note that this creates a separate file in the SharePoint Portal Server workspace folder.
WORKAROUND
Check in the file from the Web Folders interface on a computer that has the SharePoint Portal Server client installed on it.
