Uploading an Internet Shortcut to the Portal on Windows 2000 May Not Work (274596)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q274596

SYMPTOMS

If you try to use the SharePoint Portal Server portal to upload a desktop shortcut for an Internet site that has a .url extension, the upload may not work and you receive the following error message:
The above file name is invalid.
You also cannot open the shortcut from Microsoft Windows 2000 Notepad.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Internet Explorer upload control calls the Windows File Open dialog box, which sends an HTTP request to the Internet site to verify the URL. Depending on the site's configuration, this request may be refused by the site, which causes the upload not to work.

WORKAROUND

Upload the shortcut by using the portal on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows Millennium. Or use Web Folders on a Windows 2000-based computer on which the SharePoint Portal Server client is installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
