Internet Connection Changed When the First Dial-Up Networking Connection Is Created (274575)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q274575 SYMPTOMS
After you create the first Dial-Up Networking connection in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook Express may attempt to connect to the Internet by using the new dial-up connection. The new connection is initiated instead of your regular cable modem or Local Area Network (LAN) connection.
CAUSE
When the first Dial-Up Networking connection icon is created in Windows Me, it is automatically set up as the Internet Explorer default connection. This can be an issue if you connect to the Internet using a LAN or if you have selected the Dial whenever a network connection is not present option.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, manually change the Internet connection settings. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Internet Options, and then click the Connections tab.
- Click to select either of the following options:
- Never dial a connection
- Dial whenever a network connection is not present
Select the Never dial a connection option if you connect to the Internet using a cable modem or LAN.
