SMTP Service Hangs When Handling Many Domains (274417)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
This article was previously published under Q274417 SYMPTOMS
The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service may become unresponsive (hang) for several minutes or more if many domains are configured in the metabase.
CAUSE
The SMTP service does not pick up change-notification data announcements when domains are added or deleted. This causes SMTP to perform a complete reload every time a change occurs. The service start time can exceed the amount of time Service Control Manager (SCM) allows because the domains are being loaded in the main thread.
