SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft SideWinder Game Voice, you may not be able to establish a connection to Game Voice chat sessions.

-or-

You may receive an error message similar to the following:
Sidewinder Game Voice can't host a chat at this time. Try running the sound hardware test wizard or reinstalling DirectX 8.0 or later.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you run Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Internet Connection Sharing is not compatible with the SideWinder Game Voice and certain DirectPlay programs.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, turn off Internet Connection Sharing in Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) while using the SideWinder Game Voice, or uninstall Internet Connection Sharing.

To uninstall Internet Connection Sharing:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Network.
  3. On the Configuration tab, click Internet Connection Sharing, and then click Remove.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SideWinder Game Voice.
