SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word mail merge document that contains information from a Microsoft Access database, macros contained in the database may be enabled, and Word may not display the macro virus warning message.

This problem can occur in either of the following situations:
  • You open the Word mail merge document as an e-mail attachment.

    -or-
  • You click a hyperlink to open the Word mail merge document that is contained in an Internet-defined, intranet-defined, or Internet Explorer-defined Restricted Sites zone.

    NOTE: To determine the Restricted Sites that are defined on your computer, view the Security tab in Internet Explorer (click Internet Options on the Tools menu).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the Word Mail Merge Security Update. This update is designed to patch Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) installations. To install the Word Mail Merge Security Update, follow these steps:
  1. Download the Wrdacc.exe file from the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. After you download the updated security patch, double-click the Wrdacc.exe file to start the installation program. Click Yes to the following message:
    This program will install the Word Mail Merge Security Update. Do you want to continue?
  3. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  4. After the update is installed, click OK to the following message:
    The update was applied successfully.
NOTE: If you attempt to install this update on a system that is already updated, you receive the following message:
This update has already been installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Word 2000 update. Please see the "Resolution" section of this article for more information.

After you install this update, when Microsoft Word opens a Microsoft Access data source that is attached to a Microsoft Word mail merge document, the following message is displayed:
main_document_filename is a mail merge main document. Word cannot find its data source, data_source_filename.
Click Find Data Source to open the Microsoft Access data source. If you are still unable to connect to the data source, follow these steps:
  1. Click Find Data Source.
  2. In the Open Data Source dialog box, click to select the data source that you want, click to select the Select method check box, and then click Open.
  3. In the Confirm Data Source dialog box, click to select MS Access Database via ODBC (*.mdb), and then click OK.
