In Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0, Microsoft Excel 97, and Microsoft Excel 2000 for Windows, you can create a data map in a worksheet by following these steps:

1. In a worksheet, select a range of cells that contains geographic data, such as country names or state names, and associated data, for example:

         State            Population
         Maryland         5008060
         North Carolina   7019142
         Texas            18276706
         Washington       5345474
   					

2. In Excel 95 and Excel 97, click Map on the Insert menu or click the Map tool on the Standard toolbar. In Excel 2000, click Object on the Insert menu, and then click Microsoft Map in the list of objects.
3. Draw the map on the worksheet.
4. If the Multiple Maps Available dialog box appears, select the map that you want to use, and click OK.

The map appears in the worksheet.

However, if you open a workbook that contains a data map in Excel for Mac, the following dialog box appears: When the workbook opens, the map appears as a black and white picture. If you select the picture, the formula bar contains a formula similar to the following:

   =EMBED("MSMap.8","")
				

If you save the workbook in Excel for Mac and then reopen the workbook in Microsoft Excel for Windows, the data map appears in color and opens for editing when you double-click it.
