SUMMARY

Trying to install the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine, otherwise known as Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) 2000 onto a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2, may generate an error message, which indicates that the Msvcrt.dll file was not found. Here is a sample command line statement and the error message that occurred when the statement was used:

setup.exe /settings win95.ini /L*v e:\temp\msde_install.log

Cannot find file path (or one of its components).
Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all
required libraries are available.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. You cannot install MSDE 2000 on Microsoft Windows 95. Only client connectivity components can be installed on Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

As an alternative to using MSDE 2000, you can install Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 on computers that are running Windows 95. MSDE 1.0 ships with Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 or Microsoft Office 2000.
