Prerequisites for Microsoft Exchange Domain Preparation failed:
The component "Microsoft Exchange Forest Preparation" cannot be assigned the action "Install" because:

- Either you do not have permission to update the Active Directory schema or Active Directory service is currently too busy.
You receive this error message even though you do have the proper permissions to update the schema.

The Exchange 2000 Setup.log file may contain entries that are similar to the following example:

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Remote Registry service is not running. To install correctly, Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 must have remote access to the registry, even though Exchange is being installed locally.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start the Windows 2000 Server Remote Registry service.
