BUG: Wallpaper Bitmap Disappears When You Switch Between CRT and LCD Screens on Notebook Computers (274103)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP1

This article was previously published under Q274103

SYMPTOMS

When an external CRT is connected to a notebook computer and Active Desktop is disabled, the background bitmap disappears if the video output is switched between the CRT and LCD mode. Screen switching is usually accomplished by using a special keyboard sequence such as Fn+F7 or Fn+F5.

This behavior only occurs if the desktop resolution settings are changed after the video output is redirected from the LCD to the CRT screen. For example, a change to the desktop resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 while the video output is in the CRT mode.

RESOLUTION

The problem can be corrected by enabling Active Desktop or by making the desktop resolution settings identical for the CRT and LCD modes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem only occurs if:
  • Active Desktop is disabled.

    -and-

  • The desktop resolution for CRT and LCD modes differ.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Connect an external CRT monitor to the VGA port on the notebook computer.
  2. Start Microsoft Windows 2000.
  3. Disable Active Desktop.
  4. Set a Wallpaper bitmap.
  5. Switch to CRT only mode by pressing Fn+F7 until the CRT is active and the LCD screen is off.
  6. Change the desktop resolution while in CRT mode. For example, try adjusting the resolution to 1024x768.
  7. Switch between CRT and LCD mode by pressing the special keyboard sequence (for example: Fn+F7).
At this point, the wallpaper bitmap disappears and the desktop background color displays instead.
