This article was previously published under Q274058

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server to Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Setup may not start the upgrade process, in which case, you receive the following error message:
The Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services cannot be set to upgrade because:
This server has a "Dynamic RAS Connector" and/or a "RAS Stack" homed on it. You must delete this stack and/or connector or re-home it on another server before attempting to upgrade.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if either a DRAS Connector or the RAS stack is still installed on the Exchange 5.5 Server computer. Neither component is supported by Exchange 2000 Server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do both of the following:
  • Remove the DRAS Connector from the Configuration\Connections folder in the Exchange 5.5 Administrator.

    -and-
  • Remove the RAS Stack from the Configuration\Servers\Server Name folder in the Exchange 5.5 Administrator.
