HTML Limitations in Entourage

Entourage messages can display HTML content, but you cannot create complex HTML in an Entourage message. The HTML allows text only styling as it is described in the following HTML formatting tools. In addition, you cannot embed pictures in an HTML message.

Description of the HTML Formatting Tools

Entourage provides the following HTML formatting tools in the body of an HTML message. Note that these tools are not available in plain text message.
  • Font - Allows you to select the typeface to use in the message.
  • Font Size - Provides the following HTML sizes: largest, larger, medium, smaller, and smallest.
  • Formatting - Provides the following options: bold, italic, underline, and teletype (monospaced).
  • Justification - Provides the following options: align left, center, and align right.
  • Numbered List - Applies sequential numbers to the selected list of items.
  • Bulleted List - Applies a bullet to each line of the selected list of items.
  • Indents - Provides increase indentor decrease indent for paragraphs.
  • Font Color - Applies colors from the Macintosh system color palette to selected text.
  • Background Color - Applies color from the Macintosh system color palette to the background of the message body.
  • Horizontal Line - Applies a line as a separator in the body of the message.
NOTE: If you choose HTML as your message format and the toolbar is not visible in the message body, click Preferences on the Edit menu, and then click Mail & News Preferences. In the Messages dialog box, verify that the Show HTML Formatting toolbar in the Message Composition Window check box is selected.

How to Display Complex HTML

The following section describes how to display complex HTML messages.

How to Configure the Display of Complex HTML

To display the maximum amount of content in a complex HTML message that you receive:
  1. Click Preferences on the Edit menu, and then click Mail & News Preferences.
  2. On the Read tab, click to select the Display Complex HTML in Messages check box.
  3. Click to select the Allow Network Access When Displaying Complex HTML check box. This setting is necessary when you view pages that have embedded graphics and that are linked to a different address than the page which is displayed.
NOTE: If you do not configure these settings, the received complex HTML message displays HTML tags and the page does not render correctly.

How to Maximize the Display of Complex HTML

Some complex HTML messages may contain formatted elements such as graphics or other effects. If you try to display these elements in your message, you may receive a message that the program is running low on memory. The following two methods resolve this issue:
  • Increase the memory request for Entourage.
  • Temporarily remove the ActiveX Controls folder from the System folder.
To increase the amount of available memory:
  1. Quit Entourage and any other programs that are running.
  2. Locate the Microsoft Office 2001 folder on your hard disk.
  3. Click the Entourage program icon.
  4. On the File menu, click Get Info, and then click Memory. Edit the Preferred Size value to approximately 50 percent more than the size that is displayed.

For example, the default size for Entourage is 8192 kilobyte (KB). Change the preferred size to 12000 KB to provide 50 percent more memory.
  5. Close the Memory window.
  6. Start Entourage to view the message.
To remove the ActiveX Controls folder:
  1. Quit Entourage and any other programs that are running.
  2. Locate and double-click the System folder on your hard disk.
  3. Locate and double-click the Extensions folder on your hard disk.
  4. Locate the ActiveX Controls folder, and then drag it to the Trash icon on your Apple Macintosh desktop.IMPORTANT: Do not empty the Trash icon. The ActiveX Controls folder may be relocated to its original location after you test view the message. When you place the ActiveX Controls folder in the Trash, it assures that the ActiveX Control folder is not loaded and does not cause an increase in the amount of memory that is used.

  5. Start Entourage, and then try to view the message.
To relocate the ActiveX Controls folder to its original location, click the Trash icon, click the ActiveX Controls folder icon, and then click Put Away on the File menu.
