SYMPTOMS

When you run Detect and Repair for Office 2000, you receive the following error message:
Error 1931. The Windows Installer service cannot update the system file Drive-Letter\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\VGX.DLL because the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for this program to work correctly.
where Drive-Letter is the drive where Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional is installed.

When you click OK, the repair process continues successfully.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5, Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 SP1 or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 SP2 is installed on the computer.
  • Your operating system is Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
  • You click Detect and Repair on the Help menu or click Repair Office for a Microsoft Office product from the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

RESOLUTION

To resolve or work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Click OK in the error message dialog box to close the dialog box. Detect and Repair will continue to run normally.

Method 2

To prevent this error message from appearing, upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.

Method 3

Contact Microsoft Technical Support to obtain a fix to prevent this error message from appearing.
