WD2002: Height of Blank Rows Differs Between Internet Explorer and Word (273982)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q273982
For a Microsoft Word 2000 version of this article, see 224626.

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer to open a Web page that contains a table with a blank row between the header row and the first data row, and then you open the same file in Microsoft Word, the height of the blank row between the header row and the first data row differs in the two programs.

For example, when you open your Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer, your Web page may look similar to the following:

Rank Position C/A Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Fum G FP
1 Quarterback 210/349 2777 23 7 40 242 4 5 9 203

However, when you open the same Web page in Microsoft Word, the height of the blank row is much taller than in Microsoft Internet Explorer, as in the following example:

Rank Position C/A Yds TD Int Att Yds TD Fum G FP

1 Quarterback 210/349 2777 23 7 40 242 4 5 9 203

CAUSE

This behavior is by design in Microsoft Word. Empty (blank) table cells (rows) in a table contained on a Web page are displayed as the height of the format or paragraph format applied to the end-of-cell mark.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, delete the blank row of the table on your Web page. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Open dialog box, click to select Web Pages (*.htm;*.html) in the Files of type box.
  4. Browse to select your Web page, and then click Open.
  5. Click anywhere in the blank row.
  6. On the Table menu, point to Delete, and then click Rows.
