WD2002: Numbering Format in Text Wrapping Area Does Not Work As Expected (273966)

This article was previously published under Q273966 For a Microsoft Word 2000 version of this article, see 210012.
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word, when you type text in a numbered list, and you then attempt to start a new paragraph below the numbered list, an empty numbered line may be created, and the new paragraph then starts with a number.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when the numbered list is in a word-wrapping area, and you use the Click and type option on the Tools menu, as in the following example:
- In Word, on the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Edit tab, under Click and type, click to select the Enable click and type check box.
- On the View tab, under Formatting marks, click to select the All check box, and then click OK.
- On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
- Select any picture file, and then click Insert.
- Double-click to the right of the inserted picture.
The insertion point moves to the right of the inserted picture and a word-wrap symbol appears. - Click Numbering on the Formatting toolbar.
The inserted picture moves to the right, away from the left margin, and the number 1 appears next to the insertion point. - Type Stop.
- Double-click three or four lines below the list, but still in the word-wrap area.
Note that several blank lines appear as expected, but that an empty number 2 appears, and the insertion point is next to the number 3 instead of at the beginning of a new paragraph. NOTE: When you repeat step 9 below the word-wrapping area, you are able to start a new (blank) paragraph as expected.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, after the extraneous list numbers have been created, select and delete the numbers. You can now place the insertion point anywhere in the wrapping area to begin typing new text without continuing the list.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATIONFor more information about the Click and Type feature, click Microsoft Word Help on the
