SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Word document by double-clicking an embedded object in another program (such as Microsoft WordPad), the document may have the wrong template attached to it.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following are true and occur in the given order:
  1. In Word, you create a new template, and then add Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications code to the template.
  2. You save, close, and then re-open the template.
  3. Within the template, you create a new style, save the template, and then close the template.
  4. You create a new document based on the new template, save the document, and then close the document.
  5. You insert the Word document as an embedded object in a file created in another OLE-capable program, such as WordPad.
  6. You double-click the embedded object.
When you double-click the embedded object, Word starts, but the document may have the default template (Normal.dot) attached to it instead of the new template that you created.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
