This article was previously published under Q273860 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you edit, print, or preview a project or change to a different view, you may receive the following error message:
Winproj caused an exception 10H in module WINPROJ.EXE at address.
CAUSE
This problem may occur in Microsoft Project 2000 when the following conditions are true:
- Your computer's operating system is Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98.
- You have a Hewlett-Packard or HP-compatible printer that uses the Hewlett-Packard PCL printer language.
- The printer uses a printer driver supplied by Hewlett-Packard or another third-party, rather than the driver that is included with Microsoft Windows.
This problem occurs because some third-party PCL printer drivers are incompatible with Microsoft Project 2000. The problem is more likely to occur when the PCL printer is set as your default printer, but may occur any time you use the printer with Microsoft Project.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.
Method 1: Install the Driver from the Microsoft Windows CD
If a driver for your printer was included with Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, you can uninstall the driver that you are currently using, and install the driver that is included with Windows. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- In the Printers window, select your current printer.
- On the File menu, click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
NOTE: If you receive a dialog box that asks whether you want to delete files used only by this printer, click Yes. - In the Printers window, double-click the Add Printer icon.
- In the Add Printer Wizard dialog box, click Next.
- In the Manufacturer and Model lists, select the manufacturer and model of your printer. Click Next.
- Under How is this printer attached to your computer?, click Local printer.
NOTE: If the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box is available, click to clear (uncheck) it. - Click Next.
- In the Available ports list, click LPT1. Click Next.
- If you are asked whether to use the current driver, click Replace existing driver, and then click Next.
- Under Do you want your Windows-based programs to use this printer as the default printer?, click Yes. Click Next.
- Under Would you like to print a test page?, click No. Click Next.
- Click Finish.
NOTE: If your Windows Setup files are not located on your hard disk, you are prompted to insert your Windows installation CD.
Method 2: Change to a Different Default PrinterNOTE: This workaround reduces the frequency of the problem, but does not eliminate the problem, unless you never use the printer while you are working in Microsoft Project.
Set a different printer model as the default, and when you are ready to print a project, select the original printer in the Print dialog box in Microsoft Project. If no other printer models are available to use, you can install an additional Windows printer that is similar to the printer that is causing the problem, and then set the new printer as the default.
For example, for later model HP DeskJet series printers, you can install the HP DeskJet 550C or 870C driver.
To set another existing printer as the default, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- In the Printers window, select the other printer.
- On the File menu, click Set as Default Printer.
To install a Windows printer and set it as the default printer, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
Click Next.
Workaround 3: Change to a PostScript Driver
If your printer is capable of using either a PCL or a PostScript driver, you can delete the PCL printer, install the PostScript driver, and then set it as your default printer.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
