SYMPTOMS

When you click Open or New on the File menu, and begin a drawing, you may receive the following error message:
Visio32.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down
-or-

When you start Microsoft Visio, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:
Visio32 caused an invalid page fault in mso9.dll at 0167:4317d764.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

An error similar to the following may also be logged in the DRWTSN32.LOG file:

Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)
Function: MsoWZCopy

CAUSE

This behavior may occur on a computer on which Microsoft Office 2000 has been installed, but on which an Office program (such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Microsoft FrontPage) has never been started.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, start an Office 2000 program before you begin a new drawing in Visio. For example:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft Excel.

    NOTE: If Microsoft Excel is not available for this step, start Microsoft Word or Microsoft Access instead.
  2. On the File menu, click Exit.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
