MacPPT: Zoom Out Custom Animation Causes PowerPoint to Unexpectedly Quit on Mac OS 8.1 (273682)

SYMPTOMS

When you view a Microsoft PowerPoint slide show on a Mac OS 8.1-based computer that contains the custom animation "Zoom Out From Screen Bottom," the program quits unexpectedly and you receive the following error message:
The application 'Microsoft PowerPoint' has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred. You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the Monitors setting under Control Panel is set for millions of colors on a Mac OS 8.1-based computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do one of the following:
  • Set Monitors under Control Panel to 256 colors.

    -or-
  • Upgrade the operating system to Mac OS 8.5 or later. -or-

  • Select a different custom animation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
