XADM: You Cannot Add a Nested Distribution List as a Member of a Distribution List (273408)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q273408 SYMPTOMS
When you view the membership of an existing distribution list (DL) in Active Directory Users and Computers, a nested DL that you just added may not be displayed as a member if:
- You used the Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Exchange Server Administrator program to add the DL as a member of the other existing DL.
- You then ran the Request now option in your Active Directory Connector (ADC) to replicate this information to your Active Directory.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the existing DL is either a global security group or a distribution group that was created in Active Directory, and then replicated to Exchange Server 5.5.
Although you can modify the membership of a global group in the Exchange Server 5.5 version of the Exchange Server Administrator program, a global group in Active Directory cannot have a nested DL. Therefore, the membership is not replicated to Active Directory.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem if your Microsoft Windows 2000 domain is in Native mode, change the group scope to Universal. If your domain is in Mixed mode, you cannot change the group scope to Universal.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. MORE INFORMATION
Be default, a DL that was created in Exchange Server 5.5 is replicated to Active Directory with a Group Scope of Universal and a Group Type of Distribution, so that all of the nested DL members are retained.
