XADM: Exchange IFS Volume Seems to Lose Disk Space (273212)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q273212

SYMPTOMS

If you try to copy a large file to the drive, but the copy procedure fails, the Exchange Installable File System (IFS) volume may seem to lose disk space.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because even though the copy procedure fails, the .stm file still increases in size to make enough space to write the file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, either run an online or an offline defragmentation procedure on the .stm file. When you do so, disk space is made available to the operating system.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
