The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q273158

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to access a folder or a file that is located on the Exchange Installable File System (IFS) volume and that contains a trailing space or period (.) in its name, you get an error message similar to the following:
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

The system cannot find the path specified.

The system cannot find the file specified.

<PATH>\<FILE> is not accessible. The folder was moved or removed.
This behavior occurs if you try to access the folder or file using either a command prompt or Microsoft Windows Explorer.

This behavior may also prevent you from being able to delete the parent folder of the file or folder that contains the trailing space or period in its name.

WORKAROUND

Remove the trailing space or period from the name of the file or folder on the Exchange IFS volume.

If the problem folder is an Exchange 2000 public folder, you can use Exchange System Manager to change the name of the folder or file by locating the folder under the Public Folders tree for the administrative group that has the folder.

If the problem folder or file is a mailbox folder, a file in a mailbox folder, or a file in a public folder, you can use an e-mail client to log on to the mailbox, and then change the name of the folder or file in the client.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
