Branch Does Not Collapse in Windows Explorer (273020)

SYMPTOMS

In Windows Explorer, when you have an entire directory tree open with a lower-level branch selected (for example, C:\Program Files\Directx\Setup), and then you click the minus sign (-) next to a higher-level branch in the tree (for example, C:\Program Files) to collapse the branch, the higher-level branch is selected, it is collapsed, and then it is re-expanded.

CAUSE

The intended behavior in this situation is for the branch to stay collapsed. Normally, you can collapse and expand the directory tree under the level that is selected. However, it is only when you try to collapse a directory that is not already selected that you have this problem.

This behavior can also occur if the View as Web Page feature in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 is enabled.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do either of the following methods:
  • Click the minus sign (-) a second time to collapse the branch. -or-

  • On the View menu, disable the View as Web Page feature.

STATUS

This behavior is resolved in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
