Event ID 4097 When You Synchronize All Offline Files Before Logging Off Policy (272958)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q272958

SYMPTOMS

After you enable or disable any of the offline files policies for users or computers, the following error message may appear in the event log on Windows 2000 Professional clients:
Source: EventSystem
Category: Event System
Type: Error
Event ID: 4097

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8001010D from line 42 of .\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Explorer.exe responds to the policy request. It creates the SyncMgr object while in a send message. The COM+ error handling routine logs event 4097 with a resulting 8001010D - RPC_E_CANTCALLOUT_ININPUTSYNCCALL entry.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

If the event log entry is caused by an offline files policy being enabled or disabled, you can ignore these errors. The policy settings are being set and function correctly.

One method to identify whether the event is caused by an offline folder policy setting is to:
  1. Temporally mark all the policies that are contained in Administrative Templates\Network\Offline Files to Not Configured for both users and computers.
  2. Run the secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy /enforce command.
  3. Run the secedit /refreshpolicy user_policy /enforce command.
Computers that are affected by this problem only generate event ID 4097 when offline files policies are enabled or disabled. If an event ID 4097 occurs with "8001010D," either the problem is caused by another policy or not all offline files policies have been disabled.

The Event system logs generic COM+ events with event ID 4097. Details that are more specific are contained in each 4097 entry. In this particular case, every event 4097 contains "HRESULT was 8001010D from line 42 of .\eventsystemobj.cpp." If the event details are different, the offline files policy is not causing the problem; you must research the cause of the problem.
