System Stops Responding When You Preview a Large Slideshow in Movie Maker (272957)

This article was previously published under Q272957

SYMPTOMS

When you preview the timeline or storyboard of a project that contains a slideshow in Microsoft 3D Movie Maker, the system stops responding, except for hard disk drive activity.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when a large number of high-resolution still images are added to a project. When you preview the timeline or storyboard, a Direct Show filter must open and render each of the images. The larger the image, the longer it takes to unload the filters and restore the system.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, reduce the resolution of the still images to 72 pixels per inch (PPI) in an image editing software program. The system releases control after the Direct Show filters have been unloaded.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior only affects preview and does not occur when saving the movie file.
