SYMPTOMS

When attempting to access a digital video (DV) device with either Microsoft Windows Movie Maker or Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), the device does not respond properly.

CAUSE

This can occur if you are not using an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1394 adapter that meets the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification, or the IEEE 1394 OHCI device is not using the Microsoft Digital Video stack.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, ensure that your IEEE 1394 OHCI adapter, and DV device are using the drivers included with Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

Before following these steps, disconnect the DV device from the IEEE 1394 OHCI controller.

To install the drivers included with Windows Me, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then on the Device Manager tab, double-click your IEEE 1394 OHCI controller (this is usually located under 1394 Bus Controller.
  2. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
  3. Select the Specify the location of the driver (Advanced) option, and then click Next.
  4. Select the Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the correct driver option, and then click Next.
  5. Click the driver that best fits your hardware and that is dated 6/8/2000.
  6. Reconnect the DV device, and it should be enumerated and listed in Device Manager as a 61883-compliant device.

MORE INFORMATION

IEEE 1394 controllers that do not meet the OHCI specification are not supported for use with DirectShow, Windows Movie Maker, or WIA.

IEEE 1394 OHCI drivers are not updated by default to ensure compatibility with previously installed software. Some applications that are bundled with the controllers are ported for a specific Digital Video stack, and may not function with the Microsoft DV stack.

You should contact the manufacturer to receive updates for the bundled software.
