XL2001: Column Settings Are Not Updated When Rows Are Added to a List Using Excel 98 or Excel 2000 (272893)

SYMPTOMS

The following behavior can occur when you open an Excel 2001 for Mac workbook in Excel 98 or Excel 2000. If you add data to one column in a list object, then the column properties, formats, and validation for adjacent columns are applied only to the last row added.

In addition, you may receive the following warning message when you open the workbook again in Excel 2001 for Mac:
This file contains one of more lists that are maintained by the list Manager. The file was originally created in Microsoft Excel 2001 and was later saved by another version of Excel that does not support the List Manager. The list properties may have been affected by other versions of Excel and may be incorrect.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the List Manager is a new feature in Excel 2001 for Mac, and earlier versions of Excel may cause unexpected behavior or loss of data when they are used to edit files containing list objects.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, reapply column settings to the affected columns after reopening the workbook in Excel 2001 for Mac.
