The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q272888

SYMPTOMS

When you paste numeric values from the Microsoft Office Clipboard to a cell, the decimal may be unexpectedly rounded off to the default second decimal place.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The cell or cells are formatted with either the Currency or Accounting number format.

    -and-

  • You copy the cell or cells to the Office Clipboard and then paste by using the Paste Selected button or you drag from the Office Clipboard to another cell.
NOTE: The same symptoms occur if you paste a value with other methods after you have pasted that value from the Office Clipboard. To work around this issue, recopy the cell, and then paste it by using other methods such as COMMAND+V or by clicking Paste on the Edit menu. This issue with standard methods of pasting does not occur after you copy to the Office Clipboard, but only after you paste from the Clipboard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Recopy the cell or cells, and then paste by using methods that do not involve the Office Clipboard, such as the keyboard shortcut of COMMAND+V or by clicking Paste on the Edit menu.

Method 2

Reapply to the incorrectly formatted cell or cells the Currency or Accounting format that you want.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue does not occur if the values are formatted as numbers, but only with formats that use the currency symbol.
