XL2001: Menus Are Dimmed and System Beeps When You Use the Conditional Sum Wizard After the Spelling Checker (272884)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac, when used with:
    • the operating system: Mac OS 9.0

This article was previously published under Q272884

SYMPTOMS

After you use the Conditional Sum Wizard, all menus except Help may be dimmed and unavailable. When you click anywhere in the workbook, you receive a system beep, and Microsoft Excel appears to be unresponsive.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You start the spelling checker in the worksheet by clicking Spelling on the Tools menu.

    -and-

  • After using the spelling checker, you click Tools, click Wizard, and then click Conditional Sum to start the Conditional Sum Wizard.

NOTE: There can be intervening actions between the first condition and the second.

    -and-

  • The operating system is Mac OS 9 or later.
NOTE: This behavior can occur even if you click Cancel in either or both the Spelling and Conditional Sum Wizard dialog boxes. Additionally, this behavior may not occur until the second or third time that you repeat the sequence of checking the spelling and then starting the Conditional Sum Wizard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, click any tool on a toolbar that produces a dialog box, such as the Open button. If you click Cancel, the menus are restored and you can continue to work normally in the workbook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue occurs only when you use the Conditional Sum Wizard after you use the spelling checker in the same Excel session. If you check the spelling of a workbook and want to use the Conditional Sum Wizard, you can save the workbook and quit Excel. Then, start Excel again and run the Conditional Sum Wizard, and the issue does not occur.
