This article was previously published under Q272879

SYMPTOMS

If you create a list column in the List Wizard, with a data type assigned to the column, and then attempt to change the formatting of the alignment, font, border, patterns, or protection of the cells in the column, the data in the column will not appear in the correct format, as shown in the following table:
   Data type Incorrect format
   --------- --------------------------------------------
Currency No dollar sign; any number of decimal places
   Text Numbers are right justified
   Date Date serial number displayed
Time Only decimal serial value displayed

CAUSE

This problem occurs when, in Step 2 of the List Wizard, you click Settings and then click Formatting.

WORKAROUND

To get the column to display the data type in the correct format, click Column Settings on the List toolbar, and then click OK. The format for the data type is then refreshed and appears correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel X for Mac.
