This article was previously published under Q272874

SYMPTOMS

When you apply conditional formatting to a column in a list and the condition contains a relative reference, the reference is set for the first cell in the column. If you insert a row above the first row or delete the first row, the relative reference for each cell is maintained, but the conditional formatting in the Column Settings on the List toolbar still displays the original reference, instead of the reference found in the new first cell in that column.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do one of the following:
  • Use the Conditional Formatting command on the Format menu to apply conditional formatting to cells in a list. or

  • Change the condition in the Column Settings' Conditional Formatting dialog box to match the condition of the new first cell in the column by typing in the new condition.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
