XL2001: Setting Text Length Validation Criteria Beyond the Maximum Value Allowed Returns Incorrect Error Message (272871)

SYMPTOMS

When you set the text length data validation criteria for a cell as equal to a number larger than the maximum allowed by Excel, you receive the following incorrect error message
Negative values cannot be used for Text length conditions.
even though the number that you typed is not negative.

RESOLUTION

The error message is displayed because the text length criteria exceeds the maximum allowed by Excel, which is 2,147,483,647. Select a value that is equal to or less than 2,147,483,647.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
